About Ben Nevis
Established in 1825 by John McDonald, known as 'Long John' — lending his name to the long-running Long John blend — Ben Nevis sits at the foot of Britain's highest mountain in Fort William. Water comes from the Allt a'Mhuilinn burn that flows directly from Ben Nevis, running through granite and into the distillery. The distillery produces a distinctive waxy, robust Highland new make using a mix of peated and unpeated malt, distilled through two relatively large wash stills and two spirit stills with descending lyne arms. Acquired by Nikka (Asahi Group) in 1989, some spirit is exported to Japan for use in Nikka blends, while the remainder is matured on site in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, sherry butts, and virgin oak. Long-aged Ben Nevis single casks — particularly those from the 1990s and early 2000s — are highly sought after at auction.
